About this tool
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin, adapted from a passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum written in 45 BC, and typesetters have used it since the sixteenth century. The reason it persists is not tradition but function: it has roughly the letter distribution and word-length rhythm of ordinary English prose, so a layout filled with it looks like a layout filled with real text, while being unreadable enough that nobody stops to read it. That last property is the point. Fill a mockup with real copy and reviewers discuss the copy; fill it with visible nonsense and they discuss the layout. Placeholder text is also how you discover whether a design survives contact with content that is longer or shorter than the ideal — a card that looks balanced with four words and breaks with forty. Cause: Placeholder text is easy to forget in a component that is rarely rendered — an error state, an empty list, a confirmation email — and no compiler warns about it.
Fix: Add a build-time or CI check that greps for lorem, ipsum, and dolor across templates and content files. Reviewing every state of a component before release catches the rest.
The design breaks once real copy is added
Cause: Placeholder text was generated at a convenient length. Real content is irregular — headlines that wrap to three lines, names longer than the column, a description field left empty.
Fix: Test each layout at several content lengths, including empty and far too long. Generate deliberately short and deliberately long placeholder blocks rather than one comfortable size.
Latin placeholder is wrong for a non-Latin-script design
Cause: Lorem ipsum has Latin letterforms and word lengths. It tells you nothing about how a layout handles Devanagari, Arabic, or CJK, which differ in line height, baseline behaviour, and text direction.
Fix: Use placeholder text in the script the product will actually ship in. Right-to-left layouts in particular need testing with real Arabic or Hebrew content, not transliterated Latin.
