About this tool
Writing a number in words is a legal requirement more often than a convenience. Cheques carry the amount in words precisely because words resist alteration in a way digits do not — adding a zero to 1,000 is trivial, and rewriting one thousand as ten thousand is not. Invoices, contracts, promissory notes, and court filings follow the same logic. The complication is that English has two incompatible grouping systems in active use. The international system groups digits in threes and counts in thousands, millions, and billions. The Indian system groups the first three digits and then in pairs, counting in thousands, lakh, and crore, so 1,500,000 is fifteen lakh and is written 15,00,000. Both are correct; which one is expected depends entirely on where the document will be read, and mixing them in a financial document is the kind of error that gets a payment rejected. This tool converts numbers to words in both systems simultaneously, and converts written words back to digits. Decimals are handled in the fractional form used on cheques.
- 1
Type a number into the input field.
- 2
The spelled-out version appears instantly in both international and Indian numbering systems.
- 3
Use it for cheques, legal documents, invoices, or any context requiring numbers written in words.
Spell out numbers for cheques, legal documents, or formal writing.
Parse written numbers from user input or text into numeric values for processing.
Verify how large numbers like billions or trillions are expressed in words.
Simple number
1000One ThousandLarge number (Indian system)
1500000Fifteen LakhDecimal amount
1250.50One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty and 50/100The Indian and international results disagree
Cause: They are supposed to. Fifteen lakh and one point five million are the same quantity expressed under different grouping conventions, and the digit separators differ too — 15,00,000 against 1,500,000.
Fix: Pick the system that matches the document's jurisdiction and use it consistently. Indian banking, tax, and legal documents expect lakh and crore; international contracts expect millions and billions.
A decimal amount is not written the way my bank expects
Cause: Cheque conventions vary. Some banks expect and 50/100, others expect point five zero, and many expect the paise or cents spelled out in full.
Fix: Follow your bank's printed example. The integer portion is standard everywhere; only the fractional convention differs, and it is worth copying the exact form from a previous cleared cheque.
Very large numbers lose precision
Cause: JavaScript numbers are IEEE 754 doubles, which represent integers exactly only up to about nine quadrillion. Beyond that, digits are silently rounded before conversion begins.
Fix: Keep values within the supported range. For amounts that genuinely exceed it, split the number and convert the parts, or use a fixed-decimal representation rather than a floating-point one.
These answers explain common number to words tasks, expected input formats, and edge cases so both visitors and search engines can understand what this tool does.
What is the largest number supported?
The tool supports numbers up to 999 quadrillion (999,999,999,999,999,999), which covers all practical use cases including financial and scientific values.
Does it support decimal numbers?
Yes. Decimal numbers are converted with the fractional part read digit by digit after the word 'point', for example 3.14 becomes 'three point one four'.
Does it support negative numbers?
Yes. Negative numbers are prefixed with 'negative', for example -42 becomes 'negative forty two'.
What is the output language?
The output is in English. Numbers are written using the short scale system (where 1 billion = 1,000,000,000), which is standard in the United States, United Kingdom, and most international contexts.
Can I use this for writing cheques or legal documents?
Yes. Converting numeric amounts to words is required on cheques and formal financial documents to prevent fraud and ambiguity. Paste the numeric amount and copy the spelled-out result directly into your document.
